The world's most elite surfing series returns to the Gold Coast

26 Apr 2024

The Gold Coast has secured the rights to host a World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour event at Snapper Rocks for the next four years.

The World Surf League has announced the iconic point break will return to the Championship Tour schedule from 2025-2028, after a five-year hiatus.

The sand-bottomed break, nestled within the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve, has long been a favourite location for the globe's best surfers.

Experience Gold Coast CEO John Warn said resecuring the WSL Championship Tour was a massive coup for the Gold Coast.

"Snapper Rocks is renowned as one of the world’s best surfing breaks and has a long history hosting world-class competition, so we were determined to work with WSL and Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) to bring this elite series back the Gold Coast," said Mr Warn.

"The Championship Tour is the absolute highest level of professional surfing, so we can expect to witness the world's biggest names in surfing competing here each year while the global broadcast showcases one of the Gold Coast's most spectacular destinations. For surfing fans and aspiring Tour contenders this is an incredible coup."

WSL APAC President Andrew Stark said WSL was absolutely thrilled to see Snapper Rocks once again become a stop on the elite Championship Tour.

It’s an event with a fantastic history, held in a location that has professional surfing in its DNA," said Mr Stark. "The long, perfect reeling walls of the ‘Super Bank’ is one of the wonders of the surfing world, and we can’t wait to see the world’s best competing for world championship points on one of the planet's most high-performance waves.

"The event returning to the Tour wouldn’t be possible without the support of the City of Gold Coast through Experience Gold Coast and the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland. We sincerely thank them for the support and for partnering with WSL to return the Tour to one of its favourite stops for both fans and competitors alike.

We are thrilled to have secured the rights to bring the Championship Tour event back to the Gold Coast,” said Mayor Tom Tate.

Snapper Rocks is an iconic point break that holds a special place in the hearts of surfers here and worldwide, and we're proud to bring this elite series back to our famous shores.

We look forward to showcasing not only the Gold Coast's renowned surf breaks, but all that the southern Gold Coast has to offer, and I encourage all Gold Coasters and visitors to come down and enjoy the action!

Dates for the Snapper Rocks event and the full 2025 WSL Championship Tour schedule will be released later this year.
